For some of us, our skincare and beauty routines are so deeply ingrained into our day that going without them would be akin to leaving the house without brushing your teeth. It’s not necessarily pure vanity; being comfortable in your own skin is hard and doing all you can to feel that way isn’t to be knocked. That being said, when the phrase ‘skincare fasting’ started cropping up across the internet, I was intrigued. I’ve always subconsciously viewed fasting as a spiritual act - a test of will, resilience and faith - that I’ve never really committed myself to. I wanted to change that.
Our refresh has seen a few changes which have inspired some questions. Many involved the mood that no one seemed to recognise: Awake while others were asking 'where has the men’s mood gone?' Bullocks was our men’s grooming range, but we realised that its uplifting and invigorating qualities were universally relevant so we reimagined it as Awake, our newest mood.
One of the biggest changes you'll notice to Cowshed this summer is how our products look. Illustrator Katie Scott was chosen to create new botanical illustrations that emphasise the natural ingredients that are at the heart of everything we do.
Ruth Costello, Soho House Design Director, Graphic Design & Art Direction, says: ‘We originally chose to work with Katie on our Morning Noon Night book to illustrate the ingredients that we use in the Cowshed spa at Soho Farmhouse from the produce gardens. For the Cowshed refresh we wanted to find a way to tie the new branding to the walled garden at Babington House without it looking twee or obvious. Katie's obsessed with creating something that pays tribute to the heritage of plant illustration but with her own spin. I think it would have been hard to find anyone else who’d give it that detailed finesse.’
You might have noticed that things look a little different around here. That's because twenty years after we opened our very first spa at Babington House in Somerset, we realised that Cowshed deserved a refresh. While the quality of our products and our commitment to natural ingredients remain unchanged, our packaging and names have evolved to make them more relevant for today.
So, what’s new?
In our commitment to all things natural and botanical, we’re very conscious of the impact that Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) in shampoos can have on the environment and the health of our scalp and hair follicles. With this in mind, we turned once again to Jess to clue us in on the debate surrounding SLS: what it does, why we don’t use it and what we use instead.
Cowshed's New Product Development Manager Oliya Kalashnikova isn't just the expert who formulates all our products, she's also a fan of home-grown, DIY beauty too. Here she shares some of her favourite hacks for healthy hair and skin.

The bestselling Wonder Balm is our solution to cluttered shelves (we’ve seen your Shelfie Sundays…) Here’s seven ways to make the most of your Wonder Balm.
After the bank holiday sun had us all reaching for sun cream, we decided a refresh on SPF products was in order. In the spirit of optimism we’re hoping there’s many more sunny days in store for us this summer, yet come rain or shine, sunscreen is always a skincare essential. With protection against UV rays and blue light, our SkinCeuticals collection protects your skin from damage. Long gone are the days of ghostly white, sticky creams that never seemed to rub in; sun protection has developed considerably in recent years, with more focus being given to creams that can be used daily to not only protect the skin but perfect it as well.
By now you likely have heard all about how life-changing hyaluronic acid is. Since rising to prominence on the skincare scene in the past few years, we haven’t been able to get enough of the moisture molecule. If you’re at a loss here, you can learn all about the cult ingredient here. In the simplest terms, hyaluronic acid is an ingredient prized by hydration seekers and dry skin sufferers; it is hydrophilic, so it attracts water to the skin and delivers that dewy look we all crave. In honour of this beloved molecule we have created an edit of our favourite products that feature hyaluronic acid.
