Catwalk report: Mary Katrantzou Spring/Summer 18

In the lead up to the launch of our exclusive collaboration with Mary Katrantzou, Cowshed attended the designer’s Spring/Summer 2018 show at London Fashion Week this weekend.

Mary is known as ‘the Queen of Print’ (as you’ll see on the Cowshed products she designed for us) and as the models walked down the catwalk this was immediately apparent. Bright, bold floral designs in vibrant colours adorned dresses and were cleverly revealed to be ‘paint by numbers’ prints with some left blank and white, as if awaiting a hand holding a colouring pencil to fill them in.

Mary didn’t confine herself to digital prints however – other pieces were ingeniously fashioned from multi-coloured plastic beads and even, in the case of a few astonishing outfits, Lego bricks.

There was a distinctively ‘70s colour palette with clashing combinations of blue, lime green and white, purple and yellow creating a joyful effect that perfectly suited the collection's title - ‘The Youth of the Year’. Crochet, macramé, polka dots and inflatable handbags with chunky plastic chains added to the retro flavour which still felt modern thanks to sleek, minimal hair and make-up.

But the show stopping looks came right at the end – gowns heavily embellished with sequinned flowers. Even these had a sporty feel and we can expect to see them worn by fashion-forward starlets on the red carpet come awards season. All in all, the collection was a celebration of colour, sparkle and energy and proof that Mary Katrantzou is one of the most exciting and innovative designers working in London today.
